A message from Pastor Summer -- November 2015

There’s a part of me that always enjoys when science is stumped.  Recently, I discovered that science doesn’t really understand why the colors of the leaves in fall are more vibrant some years than others.  There are theories about having enough rain, or an early frost, or Indian summer.  The old-timers in Vermont are convinced it’s the early frost, and I tend to agree, but no one knows why that’s true.  Science is stumped at this point. The vivid reds, yellows, and oranges of fall defy explanation.  We are simply left to enjoy the rainbow of colors and witness in awe God’s creation.  I like that feeling.  I like the thought of awe and wonder in the world.  I believe we sometimes become jaded, cynical, and complacent.  Our childhood sense of wonder is replaced with explanations and reasons.  We stop looking around us and focus on only what is in front of us. We are no longer surprised.  Somehow the world loses its magic.

The eastern world has always left room for wonder.  It has always embraced mystery where we in the west have shied away.  We in the west like explanations.  We like reasons.  It’s why we like science.  But science doesn’t hold all the answers.  The world is more wondrous and mysterious than we can imagine and time and time gain we rediscover that truth.  Beyond the leaves of fall, the Gospel itself is a mystery.  Grace, God’s undeserved love, is beyond explanation.  It defies common sense.  It is not rational.  It is the stuff of wonder, mystery, and awe.  It is to be celebrated and enjoyed.  Grace is the color of leaves in the fall.  A gift given that is embraced and welcomed and whose truth is real and powerful though never completely explained.

This year, I will simply enjoy the colors of fall.  I will open myself to the wonder.  I will see in the leaves not only the hand of God but also God’s grace.

Peace,
Pastor Summer

Thanks again to Kay Beagle and Robbin Lamo for their craftiness in putting the gifts together.

Senior Baskets
100 gift bags will be assembled and delivered to area food pantries to distribution to seniors in need in the weeks before Christmas.  We need your help to fill the bags with special treats that most seniors would not get at the pantries.  This year we are requesting the following items to include in our bags: stamps, tea, hot cocoa, hard candy, individual snack packs, puzzle books, slipper socks, lotion, and lip balm.  Cash donations are also greatly appreciated!
**Please leave all non-cash donations at the CEB or in the narthex of the church.  Items are requested by Sunday November 29th and will be packed and delivered the following week.

The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree will be up by November 22nd with names of 20 children from Family Promise who are in need.  Social ministry is requesting 2 toys and one clothing item for each child.  Gifts should be returned by 12/6.

Feed My Starving Children
Many of you have heard, but we would like to announce that we are officially hosting a Feed My Starving Children packing event at Zion on April 1st and 2nd 2016!  Thanks to the support of a generous anonymous donor, our costs for this year are covered.  All donations gathered during our campaign will go toward payment for 2017 to make this hopefully an annual event.  The generous donation takes the pressure off of the financial burden of raising more than $20,000 so that we can focus on reaching out to recruit the 500 volunteers that we will need for 2 hour shifts over two days.    There will be much more information to come.  Please contact Rebecca Melick if you have any ideas for local groups that we might contact and invite to this exciting opportunity!

News from the Worship and Music committee

CHURCH CLEAN-UP DAY
Have you noticed that it is time to clean the chandelier globes in the church?  We saw your eyes glancing upward and counting the number of bulbs that are burned out.  Saturday, December 5th is the day to bring your dish towels and polishing cloths to the church to help get the church ready for Christmas.  Anyone willing to climb the ladder to retrieve the globes should call the office or Joanne Rupp (832-5220 or jzrupp51@gmail.com).

CHRISTMAS CHOIR
Once again, we are offering the opportunity to those of you who can carry a tune to sing with the Parish Choir for a short-term commitment. The choir will be singing on Christmas Eve at the 7pm service.  Choir rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 and Christmas rehearsals begin on November 4th.

We hope to see you the next time we meet, December 1 at 6:00 at the CEB.
